Climate Status Report 2025: Austria experiences another very warm and dry year
The annual Austrian Climate Status Report is produced by the Climate Change Centre Austria (CCCA) on behalf of the Climate and Energy Fund and all nine federal states, in collaboration with GeoSphere Austria and BOKU University, and with the involvement of numerous other research institutions.
The 2025 Climate Status Report clearly shows that Austria continues to warm rapidly. With an average temperature of 7.9 °C, 2025 was 2.1 °C above the 1961–1990 climate average, making it one of the eight warmest years since records began.
At the same time, 2025 was one of the driest years in recent decades: across Austria, precipitation was around 17% below the long-term average. The number of days with precipitation was significantly below the climate average at all altitudes. Below 500 m, there were 88 days with precipitation – 21% fewer than the average. This is the lowest figure since 1961.
The persistent drought is having an increasing impact on agriculture, forests and water resources. According to the report, river flows and groundwater levels in 2025 were below the long-term average in many places. Furthermore, hydrological analyses suggest that groundwater availability in Austria may continue to decline regionally under future climate conditions.
The report thus underscores the growing importance of climate protection and adaptation measures – such as sustainable energy supply, resource-efficient construction, urban greening, and the responsible management of water and soil.
