Earthquakes in April 2025
In April, six earthquakes were felt by the population in Austria - four in Styria and two in Tyrol.
On April 7, at 17:06 CEST, a slight earthquake of magnitude 1.4 (47.12°N, 14.36°E) occurred in the Scheifling area, Styria. It was felt weakly in isolated places and a grumble could be heard. The intensity was 2 to 3 degrees on the 12-step European Macroseismic Scale (EMS-98) weakly felt.
In southern Styria, the earth shook on April 7 at 18:52 near Leibnitz (46.78°N, 15.54°E). The earthquake with a magnitude of 1.3 was felt by some people in Heimschuh due to the shallow focal depth of around 2 km; a distinct jolt and rumbling were perceived. The intensity reached 3 degrees (EMS-98).
At 04:50 on April 15, a magnitude 2.6 earthquake with an epicenter 4 km southwest of St. Peter ob Judenburg, Styria (47.17°N, 14.54°E) was clearly felt by the population. Reports of perceptions have been received from several locations up to a maximum distance of 30 km. Buildings were shaken, objects moved slightly and some people were woken from their sleep. The intensity was 4 degrees (EMS-98).
Innsbruck, Tyrol (47.26°N, 11.41°E) was the epicenter of a magnitude 2.6 earthquake that occurred at 01:35 on 25 April and was reported to the seismological service by around 200 people. With a focal depth of around 9 km, the tremors were felt weakly to clearly in Innsbruck and several places in the surrounding area. Many felt a jolt or trembling, some woke up, some were alarmed. Objects moved and glasses rattled slightly, especially on higher floors. The intensity was rated at 3 to 4 degrees on the EMS-98.
Another felt earthquake occurred in Upper Styria at 03:27 on April 29. The epicenter was southeast of St. Georgen ob Judenburg, the magnitude was 2.0. It was only felt by a few people, the weak tremors were accompanied by a grumbling. The intensity reached 2 to 3 degrees on the EMS-98.
The epicenter of a magnitude 1.7 earthquake that occurred on April 30 at 22:55 was located near Kematen in Tyrol (47.28°N, 11.27°E). It was felt by a small number of people, some of whom were frightened. The intensity reached almost 4 degrees on the EMS-98.

- Degree 2 Scarcely: The tremor is felt only by a very few individuals at rest and in a specially receptive position indoors.
- Degree 3 Weak: The earthquake is felt indoors by a few. People at rest feel a swaying or light trembling. Hanging objects swing slightly.
- Degree 4 Largely observed: The earthquake is felt indoors by many and felt outdoors only by very few. A few people are awakened, the vibration is moderate, slight trembling of the building or room. Glasses, windows and doors rattle, light furniture shakes visibly.
