Excursion to the Hohe Warte weather station

On Friday, 21 November, from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m., the Kunsthaus Wien, in cooperation with GeoSphere Austria, is offering an excursion to the Hohe Warte weather station as part of the exhibition ‘Normal Catastrophe’ under the title ‘Controlling the Weather, Understanding the Climate,’ combining art and research in an interactive way and raising questions about our future.

For his series ‘Talking to Thunder’ (2016–2017), which can be seen in the exhibition ‘Normal Catastrophe,’ artist Julius von Bismarck travelled to the United States, Venezuela, and Colombia in pursuit of lightning. He developed his own device to capture lightning and direct it to the ground. Based on his artistic research, this excursion leads to the Hohe Warte meteorological station. In the knowledge park, measuring instruments can be tried out and it is demonstrated how weather forecasts are made. A discussion with experts on site offers an opportunity to talk about climate change in Austria or the role of meteorology in disaster control and to explore the question of whether and how the weather can be influenced.
