Development of partnerships and measures for climate change risk management in regions near the border with a particular focus on vulnerable groups

The ClimRisk project addresses the increasing challenges posed by the impacts of climate change in the Styrian/Slovenian border region, particularly with regard to climate-related natural hazards such as heavy rainfall or heat waves. These risks are increasing in intensity and frequency, causing growing damage to the population, economy, and ecosystems.

Vulnerable groups are particularly affected – for example, older people or people with disabilities – who have so far received little attention in existing risk management. Existing information, prevention, and emergency plans are often not accessible or inclusive, which jeopardizes the safety of these groups and poses significant challenges for municipalities and emergency response organizations.

The goal of the ClimRisk project is therefore to sustainably increase the resilience of Styrian and Slovenian municipalities to climate-related natural hazards – with a particular focus on the protection of vulnerable groups. To this end, a joint, cross-border natural hazard and climate risk management system is being developed, tested, and established for the long term. The project focuses on vulnerable groups, nature-based climate change adaptation solutions, and intensive knowledge transfer between all partners.
