6th international avalanche symposium
GeoSphere Austria and Naturfreunde Österreich are organising the sixth international avalanche symposium in Graz on 18 October 2025 with public discussions, workshops and lectures. At this international symposium, the current results of avalanche research will be presented to the general public in the form of lectures, while the international line-up on the podium will strengthen cross-border cooperation in the field of snow, disaster and avalanche research.
Geosphere Austria, as a research institute and operational avalanche warning service for the province of Styria, has an important responsibility to highlight and publicly discuss specialised topics. The sixth International Avalanche Symposium 2025 will once again present and discuss scientific and practical developments in the specialist areas.
The topics are made up of the following disciplines:
- alpinism and tourism
- modelling
- avalanche forecasting
- meteorology
- risk management
- risk communication
- emergency management
- civil protection - follow-up of avalanche disasters
- psychology: NEW this year
- climate
The public symposium is a very good and important method of communicating scientific content to the general public. The results of the discussions are channelled back into research. On the one hand, lectures and workshops at the event offer the opportunity to obtain information for interested parties, while on the other hand the expected media reports sensitise the general public.
The event (conference, workshops, media reports, etc...) transfers the scientific content to society and stimulates further discussions and developments. Practical experience is also not forgotten in this context. Practical days are planned again at the end of November and beginning of December to enable the results to be discussed in practice.
Up to 600 participants are expected.
