Earthquakes in August 2025
In August, four earthquakes were felt by the population in Austria. Two of these had their epicenters in Tyrol and two in Styria.
On August 5 at 11:55 a.m. CEST, a minor earthquake of magnitude 3.0 on the Richter scale occurred approximately 4 km east of Pfunds, Tyrol (46.96°N, 10.60°E). The population perceived the quake as a weak to distinct tremor and rumbling. Slight movement of liquids in glasses and shaking of screens were observed. The epicentral intensity reached grade 3 to 4 on the 12-degree European Macroseismic Scale (EMS-98).
Near Innsbruck, Tyrol (47.28°N, 11.32°E), a weak earthquake with a magnitude of 2.2 was felt by a few people awake at 3:46 a.m. CEST on August 20. The intensity was 3 degrees (EMS-98).
Shortly afterwards, at 10:54 p.m. CEST on August 21, an earthquake with a magnitude of 2.6 was felt weakly to distinctly by some people near Unzmarkt in Styria (47.18°N, 14.52°E). The epicentral intensity reached 3 to 4 degrees (EMS-98).
On August 27, at 1:05 a.m. CEST, a very weak earthquake occurred near Leoben in Styria. The quake, with a magnitude of 2.1, was felt sporadically by people who were awake. The intensity was estimated as 2-3 degrees (EMS-98).

- Degree 3 Weak: The earthquake is felt indoors by a few. People at rest feel a swaying or light trembling. Hanging objects swing slightly.
- Degree 4 Largely observed: The earthquake is felt indoors by many and felt outdoors only by very few. A few people are awakened, the vibration is moderate, slight trembling of the building or room. Glasses, windows and doors rattle, light furniture shakes visibly.
