Earthquakes in September 2025
In September, eight earthquakes were felt by the population in Austria. They occurred in the provinces of Upper Austria, Carinthia, Lower Austria and Styria, as well as in South Tyrol (Italy) and Slovenia.
On 2 September at 09:49 CEST, a magnitude 3.8 earthquake occurred northeast of Mals, South Tyrol, Italy (46.73°N, 10.58°E). The tremors were clearly felt in Austria, especially in the Upper Inn Valley and the Ötztal Valley, and scarcely as far as Klösterle, Vorarlberg. A distinct shaking, movement of furniture and rumbling of the ground were reported. The intensity reached a maximum of 4 on the 12-level European Macroseismic Scale (EMS-98) in Austria.
On 8 September at 5:24 CEST, the earth shook near Kleinzell im Mühlkreis, Upper Austria (48.45°N, 14.00°E). The earthquake, which had a magnitude of 2.4, occurred at a relatively shallow depth of about 4 km and was clearly felt in Kleinzell and in the St. Martin im Mühlkreis area. Some people were startled and heard a loud bang. The intensity was 4 on the EMS-98.
On 13 September at 4:00 CEST, a magnitude 2.0 earthquake was faintly felt by several people near Maria Luggau, Carinthia. The epicentre was located southwest of the Lienzer Dolomiten on the border between Carinthia and East Tyrol (46.73°N, 12.73°E). The intensity was determined to be 3 (EMS-98).
A weak earthquake with a magnitude of 1.2 and an epicentre approximately 6 km southwest of Gloggnitz, Lower Austria (47.63°N, 15.91°E), was felt by some people at 3:12 CEST on 23 September. Objects moved slightly, and creaking in the house and rumbling were perceived. The intensity reached 3 on the EMS-98 scale.
On 25 September at 3:40 CEST, a relatively strong magnitude 3.1 earthquake struck north-western Slovenia, with its epicentre 6 km north-east of Kobarid (46.28°N, 13.65°E). A weak jolt and a rumbling were felt sporadically in the Arnoldstein area, with an intensity of 2 to 3 (EMS-98) in Austria.
On 26 September at 12:30 CEST, another weak earthquake occurred southwest of Gloggnitz, Lower Austria (47.62°N, 15.90°E). With a magnitude of 1.4, the intensity reached a maximum of 3 to 4 on the EMS-98.
The epicentre of a magnitude 2.0 earthquake, which occurred at 00:22 CEST on the night of 26 to 27 September, was located in Mürzzuschlag, Styria (47.60°N, 15.67°E). Some people woke up and noticed a jolt or tremor, but the quake was only weakly felt and reported to the earthquake service by eight people. The intensity was 3 (EMS-98).
At Semmering, Lower Austria (47.64°N, 15.82°E), an earthquake with a magnitude of 2.2 occurred at 19:41 CEST on 28 September. It was weakly felt by the population in several places, including Breitenstein and Steinhaus am Semmering. The tremors were felt sporadically as far away as Reichenau and Otterthal. The intensity reached 3 on the EMS-98 scale.

- Degree 2 Scarcely: The tremor is felt only by a very few individuals at rest and in an especially receptive position indoors
- Degree 3 Weak: The earthquake is felt indoors by a few. People at rest feel a swaying or light trembling. Hanging objects swing slightly.
- Degree 4 Largely observed: The earthquake is felt indoors by many and felt outdoors only by very few. A few people are awakened, the vibration is moderate, slight trembling of the building or room. Glasses, windows and doors rattle, light furniture shakes visibly.
