Is the city creating its own climate?
As part of the City of Vienna’s “Gemma Zukunft” initiative, there will be an opportunity in 2026 to take part in a guided tour of the GeoSphere Austria measurement garden over three days.
During this guided tour of the GeoSphere Austria measurement garden on 18 May, 8 June or 14 September, you will gain fascinating insights into the topics of weather and climate. You will learn about various meteorological measuring instruments and discover how weather forecasts are produced. A particular highlight will be the launch of a weather balloon. You will also have the chance to test your knowledge of the climate in Austria in general and in Vienna in particular. Does a city actually create its own climate? And how can this be proven?
Tour guide: Astrid Kainz (GeoSphere Austra)
The walk, covering an estimated distance of approx. 1 kilometre, is not wheelchair accessible and takes place in all weathers.
“Gemma Zukunft” is an initiative of the City of Vienna. The free walking and cycling tours take place from April to October and are led – depending on the date – by city experts or experienced guides. They offer fascinating insights into Vienna’s urban development and planning and take participants through urban development areas, climate-adapted neighbourhoods and a variety of green spaces.
