Exhibition: Gravel Sand – Building on Raw Materials
Construction raw materials such as gravel, sand and mixtures thereof are essential – especially in the form of concrete – for the construction of roads, buildings and other infrastructure, as well as for maintaining our prosperity. Due to geographical and geological conditions, extraction sites in Austria are distributed very unevenly across the federal states. High-quality deposits are located in the Alpine foothills, but why there in particular? What loose rocks are available in the Alpine region? And how do stones actually travel? Austria is currently able to supply itself with gravel, sand and mixtures thereof. How long will this continue and are there any alternatives?
From October 2025, the large display window at GeoSphere Austria's Neulinggasse 38 location will provide information about gravel sand as a construction material. Text panels and exhibits will explain the formation and special features of loose rock, its use as a construction material, its occurrence and facts about raw material requirements in Austria.
The exhibition can be viewed around the clock from the public space. Further information is available from the research project ‘Application of the UNFC (United Nations Framework Classification) raw material classification system to gravel sand deposits in Austria’.
