Plenty of sunshine during training on the Streif

GeoSphere Austria has been providing special weather forecasts and weather stations along the Streif for the Hahnenkamm races for over 20 years.

The training runs for the Hahnenkamm races on Tuesday and Wednesday will take place in good weather. ‘On Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday, the sun will shine almost uninterrupted in the Kitzbühel area,’ says meteorologist Alexander Radlherr from GeoSphere Austria, ‘especially at altitudes around 1,000 metres above sea level, where daytime temperatures will be just above 0 degrees. However, due to the very dry air, no significant thaw is expected.’

Forecast for the race weekend

The weather will change slightly during the race weekend: ‘During the Super-G on Friday, the foehn wind will pick up a little, and some veil clouds will move across the sky from the south, but these will only temporarily cloud the sunny conditions. The forecast for Saturday's downhill race is still somewhat uncertain. According to the current forecast, the slightly foehn-like weather with passing cloud fields will continue and no significant amounts of new snow are expected. For Sunday's slalom, it currently looks like a mixture of sun and clouds, with temperatures just below 0 degrees in the finish area.’

Weather support for efficient preparation and safe execution

GeoSphere Austria has been supporting the Hahnenkamm races for over 20 years with special weather forecasts and weather stations along the Streif for efficient preparation and safe execution. For example, forecasts for the different sections of the course enable optimal preparation of the slopes in the weeks leading up to the races.

‘During the races, the focus is particularly on the safety of the racers, for example, whether gusts of wind could pose a danger during the jumps or whether fog could restrict visibility,’ says Manfred Bauer, head of the regional office for Tyrol and Vorarlberg at GeoSphere Austria. ‘And, of course, the organisers also want to know about any potential dangers to the public in good time – such as large amounts of snow or slippery conditions – so that they can respond as early as possible.’

Weather stations at Mausefalle, Seidlalm and Hausbergkante

To ensure optimal preparation and execution of the Hahnenkamm races, GeoSphere Austria installed three additional weather stations along the Streif in autumn. They are located at Mausefalle (1,605 metres above sea level), Seidlalm-Sprung (1,258 metres) and Hausbergkante (1,032 metres). In addition, there are the permanent GeoSphere measuring stations at Hahnenkamm-Ehrenbachhöhe (1,794 metres) and Kitzbühel-Ort (772 metres).
